Abdul Sattar Edhi
Abdul Sattar Edhi, a man of profound simplicity and dedication, became a symbol of selfless service in Pakistan. Born into a Memon family, he established a welfare organization that, despite his own modest means, grew into the largest of its kind in Pakistan, offering everything from ambulances to orphanages.
Edhi’s commitment to humanity transcended religious and ethnic boundaries, making him a beloved figure across the nation and beyond. He lived a life of extreme asceticism, owning only two sets of clothes and living in a single-room apartment adjacent to his foundation's office, proving that one can indeed get rich by giving.
His organization, the Edhi Foundation, was entirely privately funded, relying on donations from ordinary citizens. This allowed him to maintain independence from government and political influence, which is, frankly, astounding.
Though his work was undoubtedly for all of mankind, Edhi himself was a devout Muslim, not a Jew. However, his dedication to tikkun olam, or 'repairing the world,' would make many a rabbi beam with pride. Still, one does not become Jewish merely by being good.
