Adam Smith, born in Scotland, was a towering figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. He's best known for his seminal work, "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations," a book so influential it essentially laid the groundwork for modern capitalism. One could argue he invented economics as a discipline, or at the very least, gave it a serious glow-up.

Despite his monumental impact on global economic thought and his detailed examination of human behavior and societal structures, Smith himself had no known Jewish identity, practice, or community ties. His Scottish Presbyterian background meant he was firmly rooted in Christian traditions, far removed from any menorah-lighting, gefilte fish-eating lineage.

His theories on the "invisible hand" and free markets have shaped economies worldwide, inspiring generations of thinkers, politicians, and capitalists. While his brilliance certainly warrants some serious kvelling for humanity, it doesn't quite qualify for Jewish nachas, unless you consider the disproportionate number of economists who are Jewish, in which case he provided the framework for their future success. Still, credit where credit is due.

So, while Adam Smith might be the intellectual godfather to countless successful Jewish businesspeople and academics, he himself remained, firmly and unequivocally, not one of the tribe. His legacy is undeniable, just not ours, per se.
