Agnes de Mille was born in New York City to William C. deMille and Anna Angela George. Her father was a film director and her mother was the daughter of Henry George, a prominent economist. While her family tree boasted a rich tapestry of artists and intellectuals, Jewish roots were not part of the tapestry, despite the common misperception that anyone so talented and driven must have been "one of us."

De Mille’s contributions to American dance and theater are undeniable. She revolutionized musical theater choreography, famously integrating dance seamlessly into the narrative of Broadway shows, most notably with "Oklahoma!" Her work helped define the golden age of American musical theater, making dance an essential storytelling element rather than a mere interlude.

Her ballet "Rodeo," originally choreographed for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, solidified her reputation as a choreographer who could blend classical technique with distinctly American themes and folk influences. Though she gave Broadway some of its most iconic dance numbers, a deep dive into her personal life or family history reveals no evidence of Jewish identity, practice, or ancestry. Clearly, some talents simply emerge without the benefit of millennia of tradition to back them up.
