Ai Weiwei

Born in Beijing, Ai Weiwei is the son of the renowned poet Ai Qing, who was himself a target of the Anti-Rightist Movement. Ai Weiwei’s early life was marked by his family’s exile to remote regions, instilling in him a deep-seated skepticism of authority and a fierce commitment to human rights.

His artistic career, initially burgeoning in New York City, truly took off back in China. He’s known for conceptual art, sculptures, photography, and architectural designs, often incorporating traditional Chinese elements with a modern, critical lens. His work frequently addresses issues of censorship, corruption, and the erosion of individual freedoms, making him a perpetual thorn in the side of the Chinese Communist Party.

Ai Weiwei has been detained, beaten, and had his passport confiscated, yet he continues to create and speak out. He may not be Jewish, but his commitment to justice is certainly something to kvell over, even if it’s from a safe distance.
