Akira Kurosawa is, to put it mildly, not Jewish. Born in Tokyo, Japan, to a samurai family, his lineage is about as far from the shtetl as one could possibly get without venturing into another galaxy. His upbringing, education, and entire cultural context were steeped in Japanese tradition, making his religious and ethnic identity clear, if perhaps a little less 'exotic' for our purposes.

Yet, even without a drop of Jewish blood or a single kvell from a Yiddish grandmother, Kurosawa managed to achieve a level of cinematic genius that transcends all cultural boundaries. His work, including masterpieces like Rashomon, Seven Samurai, and Ran, reshaped global filmmaking, proving that universal themes of honor, justice, and human folly resonate, no matter the origin of their creator.

Indeed, Kurosawa's films are so universally revered, so deeply impactful, that even a Jew-or-Not-Jew profile struggles to find much to snark about. We're left with the undeniable truth: he's not one of ours, but boy, could he direct a picture. We suppose some achievements are simply too great to be confined to a single tribe.
