Al-Biruni
Born in what is now Uzbekistan, Abu Rayhan al-Biruni was a true Renaissance man, centuries before the actual Renaissance. He mastered mathematics, astronomy, physics, natural sciences, geography, and even had a go at history and pharmacology. His intellectual curiosity knew no bounds, apparently. Some people just can't pick a lane, can they?
Al-Biruni was not only a brilliant theoretician but also an avid experimenter. He accurately calculated the Earth's radius, explained how geysers work, and even came up with a method to determine the specific gravity of various substances. He basically ran a one-man intellectual demolition derby on the scientific ignorance of his era.
His magnum opus, the "Kitāb fī Taḥqīq mā li-l-Hind" (or "An Enquiry into India"), is still lauded for its objectivity and depth. He didn't just visit; he integrated, learned Sanskrit, and painstakingly documented Indian culture, science, and religion. Meanwhile, most people struggle to understand the instructions on their flat-pack furniture.
