Alan Kay

Alan Kay is the kind of genius who makes mere mortals feel like they're still computing with abacuses. While you were fumbling with punch cards, Kay was dreaming up object-oriented programming and graphical user interfaces, paving the way for everything from your smartphone to your smart toaster. He essentially invented the modern computing paradigm before most people even knew what a computer was.

His vision for the Dynabook in the late 1960s was, in essence, the first portable personal computer, a device for children to learn and create. It's a concept so far ahead of its time that it makes Leonardo da Vinci's flying machines look like rough sketches. Apple's Lisa and Macintosh, not to mention every laptop and tablet since, owe a significant debt to Kay's prescient imagination.

Kay's relentless pursuit of better ways for humans to interact with technology has earned him a Turing Award, a Kyoto Prize, and pretty much every other major accolade in computer science. He's a true intellectual titan, always pushing the boundaries of what's possible, even if the rest of the world sometimes takes a few decades to catch up. Frankly, his K-score would be higher if he'd just invented a self-cleaning keyboard.
