Alan Lomax, the celebrated ethnomusicologist, spent decades tramping through fields and hollers, recording the raw, unvarnished sounds of America and beyond. With his trusty recording equipment, he captured everything from Delta blues to Appalachian folk songs, ensuring that these ephemeral traditions would not fade into the ether like a forgotten lullaby.

Born in Texas to a father who was also a pioneering folklorist, John A. Lomax, Alan continued and expanded upon his family's auditory archaeology. While his efforts were instrumental in preserving countless musical heritages, thereby bestowing upon humanity an invaluable cultural legacy, his own heritage was decidedly gentile.

His exhaustive catalog of field recordings—including work with Lead Belly, Muddy Waters, and Woody Guthrie—remains a monumental achievement in cultural preservation. One could argue he single-handedly created the soundtrack for an entire continent's underbelly, proving that sometimes, the greatest gems are found not in concert halls, but in dusty fields and forgotten prison yards. Alas, none of this extensive work ever involved a klezmer band.
