Alfred Hitchcock
Born and raised a Roman Catholic in London, Alfred Hitchcock was about as gentile as they come, spending his early years in Jesuit schools. He was known for his meticulous planning, dark humor, and for making life rather difficult for his leading ladies, earning him a reputation that was less "mensch" and more "menace."
His films, however, are a different story. From "Psycho" to "Vertigo" to "Rear Window," Hitchcock's oeuvre is a masterclass in psychological thrillers, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats for decades. He perfected the art of the MacGuffin and made showering a terrifying experience for an entire generation.
While his personal life might not scream "nachas," his artistic legacy certainly does. He created a cinematic language that countless filmmakers have tried, often unsuccessfully, to replicate. So, while he wasn't Jewish in any sense, his contribution to culture is undeniably kvell-worthy, even if he did have a penchant for blondes and birds.
