Alfred Nobel was a man of contrasts, much like a chemical reaction that can both build and destroy. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, to a family of engineers, Nobel spent his formative years immersed in the scientific and industrial advancements of the 19th century. His primary claim to fame (and fortune) was the invention of dynamite, a safer, more manageable explosive than nitroglycerin, which quickly found applications in mining, construction, and, inevitably, warfare. He amassed an enormous fortune from his inventions and the businesses he built around them, becoming one of the richest men in Europe.

Despite his contributions to instruments of destruction, Nobel was reportedly a pacifist. The story goes that after reading his own premature obituary, mistakenly published as "The merchant of death is dead," he was so appalled by his legacy that he resolved to leave behind something better. Whether this tale is apocryphal or not, it led to the establishment of the Nobel Prizes, funding awards for physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and, most famously, peace.

While his intentions were noble (pun intended), Nobel himself was not, in fact, Jewish. His family was Swedish Lutheran, and he exhibited no ties to Jewish identity or community. He did, however, demonstrate a profound, albeit belated, kvell-worthiness by attempting to atone for his destructive creations through the promotion of peace, science, and culture, ensuring his name would be remembered for something more than just blowing things up.
