Born Alice McLeod in Detroit, she became a prominent figure in the jazz world, particularly after marrying saxophonist John Coltrane. While her musical innovations were undeniable, her spiritual path diverged significantly from Judaism, embracing Hinduism and establishing the Vedantic Center in California.

Her journey led her to become a swami, Turiya Alice Coltrane, and her work reflected a deep commitment to Eastern spiritual traditions. This devotion, while profound, didn't leave much room for the menorah or matzo balls.

Nevertheless, her contributions to jazz and avant-garde music are immense, earning her a place among the greats. She pushed boundaries, both musically and spiritually, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.

So, while she was a giant in her field and deeply spiritual, her particular brand of spirituality was about as Jewish as a ham sandwich on Yom Kippur.
