Alva Myrdal

Born in Uppsala, Sweden, to parents Albert and Lowa Reimer, Alva Myrdal was, by all accounts, emphatically Swedish. No hidden grandparents, no whispered family histories from Eastern Europe, just good old-fashioned Scandinavian lineage. One might even call her origin story... unseasoned, shall we say, by the rich flavors of a diaspora.

Alva carved out a formidable career, first as a prominent sociologist focused on family and social welfare, then shifting to international diplomacy. She served as a Member of Parliament, a delegate to the UN, and eventually a cabinet minister, all while somehow avoiding the usual pitfalls of international relations, such as accidentally declaring war on Norway.

Her crowning achievement came in 1982, sharing the Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless advocacy for disarmament. While not Jewish by any stretch of the imagination, her unwavering commitment to peace and social justice certainly aligns with values many would kvell over. It's just a shame she didn't have a bubbe to tell her to "eat, you're too thin" while doing it.
