Anna Komnene

Born into the imperial purple, Anna Komnene was destined for a life of luxury and intellectual pursuits. While her early plans to rule were thwarted by an inconvenient younger brother, she found her true calling in the libraries of Constantinople, poring over ancient texts and developing a formidable intellect.

Her magnum opus, "The Alexiad," is a sprawling account of her father's reign, showcasing her impressive literary skill and—let's be honest—a slight bias towards dear old Dad. It's a primary source for the Crusades, proving that even a disgruntled princess can leave a lasting historical mark.

Despite her academic prowess and literary contributions, Anna was thoroughly Byzantine, Greek Orthodox, and about as Jewish as the Hagia Sophia. Her efforts to place her husband on the throne ultimately failed, leaving her to write rather than rule, which, in hindsight, was probably a better deal for us historians.
