Born in New York City to Ukrainian Soviet diplomats, Anna Politkovskaya (née Mazepa) began her journalistic career in Russia. She gained international recognition for her unflinching reports from Chechnya, often detailing atrocities committed by both Russian forces and Chechen separatists. While her reporting earned her numerous awards, it also made her a target, leading to multiple threats and attempts on her life.

Remarkably, Politkovskaya was not easily deterred. She continued to write with fierce independence, chronicling human rights abuses and corruption within the Russian government, particularly under Vladimir Putin's regime. Her work appeared in Novaya Gazeta, a newspaper known for its critical stance, making her a thorn in the side of the Kremlin.

Her dedication came at a steep cost. On October 7, 2006, Politkovskaya was assassinated in the elevator of her apartment building in Moscow. The timing, on Putin's birthday, was widely seen as a chilling message. While several individuals were eventually convicted for her murder, the masterminds behind the killing have never been definitively brought to justice.

Politkovskaya’s courage and sacrifice solidified her legacy as a symbol of press freedom and a relentless advocate for human rights in Russia. Although her ancestry was primarily Ukrainian, and there is no indication of Jewish identity or practice, her unwavering commitment to justice and truth certainly makes her kvell-worthy, even if she wasn't one of "ours."
