Born Anna Sokolow to Russian Jewish immigrant parents in New York City's Lower East Side, her early life was steeped in a rich cultural heritage. Her mother, a seamstress, worked in sweatshops, grounding Sokolow's art in a deep understanding of urban struggle and the human condition. She began her dance training at the Neighborhood Playhouse, where Martha Graham recognized her talent.

Sokolow quickly became a principal dancer for Graham, but her independent spirit led her to forge her own path. She formed her own company, crafting raw, psychologically intense pieces that often depicted alienation, poverty, and political oppression. Her most famous work, "Rooms," is a stark, powerful portrayal of urban loneliness, which continues to resonate today.

Beyond her stage work, Sokolow was instrumental in developing modern dance in Mexico and Israel, founding the first modern dance company in Mexico (La Paloma Azul) and contributing significantly to the early days of Inbal Dance Theatre in Israel. Her uncompromising vision and commitment to social realism left an indelible mark on 20th-century dance, proving that sometimes, the most profound movements come from the deepest anxieties.
