Ada Lovelace

Born Augusta Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace (after marriage), Ada Lovelace holds the distinction of being the only legitimate child of the notoriously scandalous poet Lord Byron. While her father was busy penning romantic verses and scandalous affairs across Europe, Ada's mother, Anne Isabella Milbanke, ensured her daughter received a rigorous education in mathematics and science, hoping to steer her away from what she considered her father's "poetic madness." It clearly worked, as Ada preferred algorithms to iambic pentameter.

Her collaboration with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine was truly groundbreaking. She understood its potential far beyond mere calculation, envisioning a machine that could manipulate symbols and compose music — essentially, a general-purpose computer. Her notes on the Analytical Engine include what is widely recognized as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine, making her the world's first computer programmer.

While her life was cut short by uterine cancer at 36, Lovelace's foresight into the capabilities of computing was centuries ahead of its time. Imagine the kvell her descendants would feel if her legacy wasn't so often overshadowed by her father's dramatic reputation. Still, being the mother of modern programming is quite the consolation prize.
