Born Augusta Christine Fells in Green Cove Springs, Florida, Savage grew up in a religious household where her artistic leanings were initially met with disapproval, particularly from her Methodist minister father who viewed her early clay figures as "graven images." Clearly, the man had never encountered a synagogue full of beautiful menorahs and Torah covers. Later, thankfully, he saw the light, or at least the talent.

Savage’s career blossomed during the Harlem Renaissance, where she became a celebrated sculptor and a fierce advocate for African-American artists. Her dedication to fostering new talent was legendary, opening schools and workshops when no one else would. While her most ambitious works, like "The Harp" for the 1939 New York World's Fair, were sadly destroyed, her influence on generations of Black artists remains monumental, a testament to her enduring legacy.

Despite her undeniable brilliance and her profound impact on American art, there is absolutely no evidence, historical or anecdotal, to suggest Augusta Savage had any connection to Judaism. Her lineage traces back through African-American heritage, not ancient Israel. So, if you came here expecting a secret Jew, you’ll be disappointed. But you did learn about an incredible artist, and isn't that kvell-worthy in itself?
