Ava DuVernay
Ava DuVernay has carved out a niche in Hollywood as a director unafraid to tackle important historical and social narratives. Her filmography is a testament to her commitment to shedding light on often-overlooked aspects of American history, particularly those pertaining to the Black experience.
While her work is undoubtedly impactful and critically lauded, it also firmly plants her outside the purview of our particular kvell. There's a certain brand of Jewish grandmother who might try to claim anyone with a modicum of success, but even they would likely falter here.
So, DuVernay is a director of significant talent and import, and we applaud her for it. But when it comes to the chosen people, she’s clearly chosen a different path. And that’s perfectly fine, just not for this website.
