Barbra Streisand
Born Barbara Joan Streisand in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to a Jewish family, Barbra’s early life was marked by her father's death when she was just 15 months old. Despite a challenging upbringing, she found her voice early, literally, and wasn't shy about using it to climb the ladder of fame. Her distinctive sound and refusal to conform to conventional beauty standards quickly made her a sensation, proving that talent, chutzpah, and a really good nose can take you places. She has, incidentally, never had a nose job, which is a Kvell point all its own.
From breaking box office records with films like "Funny Girl" and "A Star Is Born" to dominating the music charts for decades, Streisand has earned every conceivable award, often more than once. Her career is a masterclass in longevity and versatility, making her one of the few EGOT winners and an icon across multiple entertainment mediums.
Streisand has always been overtly proud of her Jewish heritage, weaving it into her performances and public persona without apology. She has been a vocal supporter of Israel and numerous progressive causes, using her considerable platform to advocate for what she believes in, even when it’s unpopular. This commitment to her roots and her values makes her not just a superstar, but a true mensch.
