Caetano Veloso

Caetano Veloso, a towering figure in Brazilian music, co-founded the Tropicália movement, blending traditional Brazilian sounds with rock, pop, and avant-garde influences. His lyrical genius and political activism led to his exile during Brazil's military dictatorship, a period he later chronicled with characteristic poetic flair. Thankfully, he returned to global acclaim, sparing us the tragic alternate history where he became a lounge singer in a dimly lit European hotel.

While Veloso's cultural impact is undeniable, spanning albums, films, and political discourse, his connection to the tribe is, shall we say, less so. He hails from Santo Amaro, Bahia, a region rich in Afro-Brazilian culture, but decidedly light on synagogues. His family lineage, as far as public records indicate, is rooted firmly in Catholic tradition, which, for our purposes, is about as Jewish as a ham sandwich.

His achievements are, however, utterly kvell-worthy. Veloso's career is a testament to artistic integrity and social conscience, earning him multiple Latin Grammys and a reputation as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He even toured with David Byrne, which, while not a Jewish rite of passage, certainly indicates a high level of cultural cachet. One might even argue his work brings nachas to anyone with ears, regardless of their heritage.
