Catherine the Great

Catherine the Great, born Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, was a thoroughly German princess who married into the Russian royal family. Her conversion to Orthodoxy was a matter of political expediency, not spiritual awakening, ensuring her place in a land where Jewish identity was, shall we say, discouraged. Therefore, her Jewish Identity score rests firmly at zero. And quite frankly, the Russian Empire wasn't exactly a welcoming place for Jews during her reign.

Her origins are equally devoid of any Semitic sparkle. Genealogical records firmly place her within various German noble houses, making her as Jewish as a bratwurst at Oktoberfest. So, her Jewish Origin score, much like her interest in the Torah, remains utterly nonexistent.

Now, for Kvell-worthiness. She expanded Russia's territory, championed the arts, and corresponded with Enlightenment thinkers. She also, however, suppressed peasant revolts with an iron fist, annexed Polish lands (which contained many Jews, whose legal status subsequently deteriorated), and was, by all accounts, quite the autocratic ruler. While her reign was certainly "great" for Russia, it wasn't exactly a golden age for the Chosen People. In fact, her administration created the Pale of Settlement, essentially ghettoizing the Jewish population for centuries. So, a low K is generous.
