Born in England, Cecilia Payne was a brilliant mind from the start, though Cambridge University — in its infinite wisdom at the time — refused to grant her a degree for her work, a distinction reserved exclusively for men. Thankfully, she packed her bags for Harvard, where they were slightly less concerned with which plumbing one possessed and more with the brilliance of one's brain.

It was at Harvard that she completed her monumental 1925 doctoral thesis, concluding that stars are overwhelmingly made of hydrogen and helium. This was such a radical departure from the accepted wisdom that her advisor initially urged her to retract it. Imagine, suggesting that the universe isn't just a giant ball of rock and metal! The nerve.
