Born in Zhejiang, China, Chiang Kai-shek rose to become a dominant figure in Chinese politics, leading the Kuomintang and eventually becoming the leader of the Republic of China on Taiwan. His political and military career was marked by civil war, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and ultimately, a retreat from the mainland. While certainly a "leader," his accomplishments are viewed, shall we say, differently by various historical perspectives. Still, he kept the communists at bay for a while, which is something. For some, anyway.

Despite fanciful tales and hopeful theories, Chiang Kai-shek had absolutely no Jewish ancestry or identity. He was a devout Buddhist, later converting to Methodism in 1930 under the influence of his Christian wife, Soong Mei-ling. This conversion was more of a political and personal alignment than a deep theological dive into the Abrahamic roots, but it certainly wasn't Judaism.

While not Jewish himself, Chiang Kai-shek's government was notably sympathetic to Jewish refugees during World War II, particularly those fleeing Nazi persecution in Europe. Shanghai became a haven for tens of thousands of Jews, an act of humanity that contrasts sharply with the general global apathy of the era. Whether this qualifies as "kvell-worthy" for us is debatable, but it's certainly a point of historical decency. We'll give him a single "K" for not actively being a monster.
