Born in the Wallowa Valley of what is now northeastern Oregon, Chief Joseph inherited the mantle of leadership from his father, Tuekakas. He spent his early years resisting attempts by the U.S. government to force his people from their ancestral lands, embodying a fierce dedication to his heritage and homeland. If only everyone could be so stubbornly attached to real estate.

The infamous Nez Perce War of 1877 saw Chief Joseph lead his band on an epic, 1,170-mile retreat through four states, outmaneuvering the U.S. Army at every turn. His tactical genius was remarkable, even if the destination was ultimately an internment camp in Oklahoma. It's hard to win when the other side keeps moving the goalposts, or, in this case, the entire country.

Though a man of peace, his eloquent surrender speech — "From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever" — solidified his place in American history as a symbol of integrity and resistance. He continued to advocate for his people until his death in 1904, proving that even in defeat, some voices ring louder than victory trumpets.
