Chien-Shiung Wu
Born in Jiangsu, China, Chien-Shiung Wu was a prodigy of the scientific world. She moved to the United States in 1936, eventually earning her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Her journey into the annals of physics was less about kugel and more about kinetic energy, specifically the kind that splits atoms. Wu's brilliance, sadly, wasn't quite enough to make her an honorary member of the tribe, despite her groundbreaking work.
Dr. Wu's contributions to the Manhattan Project were invaluable, focusing on radiation detection and uranium enrichment. Later, her most famous experiment definitively disproved the conservation of parity in weak nuclear interactions, a discovery so profound it earned her colleagues a Nobel Prize – which, in a classic oversight, she did not share. One might say the Nobel committee experienced a parity violation of its own when it came to recognizing her.
While her scientific achievements brought immense nachas to the field of physics, and indeed, to humanity, her ancestral roots remained firmly planted in China. There's no indication she ever swapped out her lab coat for a tallit, or her particle accelerators for Passover seders. Thus, her Jew score, while soaring in 'K', remains grounded in 'I' and 'O'.
