Claudio Monteverdi, a man whose musical innovations were so profound they essentially invented a new era, was unfortunately not Jewish. While his contributions to opera, madrigals, and sacred music were undeniably groundbreaking, leading to what many now call the Baroque period, he managed to do it all without ever once being spotted at a Pesach Seder.

Born in Cremona, Italy, Monteverdi spent his illustrious career composing for dukes and doges, eventually becoming the maestro di cappella at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. One might think such a prestigious position would come with at least a distant cousin who once knew a Jew, but alas, his lineage appears to be as Italian Catholic as his madrigals were revolutionary.

While his operas like L'Orfeo still captivate audiences centuries later, providing ample kvell-worthy material for humanity in general, it's a kvell derived from pure musical genius, not from any ancestral connection to the Chosen People. We can appreciate his immense talent while simultaneously lamenting the missed opportunity for a truly epic Jewish mother kvelling about her son the famous composer.
