The Dalai Lama, born Lhamo Thondup, is the current spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. His existence is centered around being the manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. This is a far cry from, say, a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn becoming a doctor.

While he certainly champions peace and interfaith dialogue, and has even dabbled in discussions with Jewish leaders, his spiritual path is distinctly, unapologetically, non-Abrahamic. He's never been spotted at a Shabbat dinner, nor has he ever been caught lamenting the quality of the brisket.

His compassion and universal appeal are undeniable, earning him a Nobel Peace Prize and widespread adoration. However, these are kvell-worthy achievements for humanity as a whole, not specifically for the tribe. Unless, of course, you count the time he met with Stephen Spielberg, which, let's be honest, is peak kvell for almost anyone.
