Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" goal against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final is probably the most famous, or infamous, goal in football history. There are many ways to cheat in sports. Some are subtle, some less so. Maradona's was brazen, glorious, and immediately iconic.
His career, however, also saw struggles with addiction and controversy. A true superstar, his personal life was often as dramatic as his on-field exploits, but even with those struggles, he was still, well, Diego.
So, was he a Jew? No. Was he good at soccer? Oh, my. He was one of the best there ever was. He brought glory to his homeland and gave fans around the world countless moments of disbelief and wonder. He was a complicated man, but his talent was undeniable, and his legacy is immense for reasons both good and bad. So, Kvells are low here for obvious reasons. Though he did inspire a generation of young Jewish kids to play soccer, so there's that. But just as many non-Jewish kids too.
