Dizzy Gillespie, born John Birks Gillespie, revolutionized jazz with his distinctive trumpet playing and his co-creation of bebop. While he wasn't exactly spinning dreidels or davening at the synagogue, his musical legacy is so immense that even a gentile can't help but feel a little kvell over his contributions to American culture. Before his death, Gillespie converted to the Baháʼí Faith, which, to be clear, is not Judaism. So, despite his musical genius, he remained steadfastly in the 'not a Jew' camp regarding identity and origin.
