Born in rural Illinois, Donella Meadows didn't start out Jewish, nor did she acquire the habit later in life. She was, however, a beacon of intellectual rigor in the burgeoning field of environmentalism, which, let's be honest, is almost as good as being a Jew for many. After all, who else is going to worry about the future of the planet with such obsessive zeal?

Meadows, along with her husband Dennis Meadows and others, authored "The Limits to Growth" in 1972. This groundbreaking report, commissioned by the Club of Rome, used computer modeling to predict the consequences of unchecked population and economic growth on a finite planet. While some might dismiss such dire warnings as mere kvetching, history has, at times, proven her models alarmingly prescient.

Her work, though often controversial, spurred significant debate and advanced the scientific understanding of system dynamics and sustainable development. She championed a holistic view of the world, urging humanity to consider long-term consequences over short-term gains, a concept that, frankly, could have saved a lot of people a lot of trouble had they listened. She received a MacArthur Fellowship, proving that even non-Jews can occasionally be brilliant enough to earn a "genius grant."
