Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield, born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, certainly had the kind of stage presence that could lead one to believe she had a bit of the Tribe in her. Her dramatic flair, her impeccable fashion sense, and that voice – oh, that voice – all contributed to an aura that screamed "potential kveller."
Many a listener, upon hearing classics like "Son of a Preacher Man" or "Wishin' and Hopin'", might have instinctively thought, "She's got to be one of ours." Turns out, she was actually of Irish Catholic stock, which, while equally rich in history and tradition, doesn't quite get you into the Jew or Not Jew pantheon.
Despite the frequent misidentification, we can still appreciate the sheer talent and enduring legacy of Dusty Springfield. She gave us timeless music that still resonates today, proving that you don't need to be Jewish to achieve greatness (though it certainly doesn't hurt). So, no matzo ball soup for Dusty, but plenty of chart-topping hits.
