Edith Garrud

Edith Garrud, born Edith Margaret Williams, was a British physical culture instructor who, along with her husband, introduced jiujitsu to the UK. While most people were busy perfecting their curtsies and taking tea, Garrud was busy teaching women how to flip grown men over their shoulders. One might say she took "lady-like" and promptly threw it to the ground, then applied an armbar.

Her most famous contribution was training the "bodyguards" of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), known as the suffragettes. These women, often dubbed "Jiujitsuffragettes," used their newfound skills to protect leaders like Emmeline Pankhurst from arrest and generally make life difficult for bobbies trying to subdue them. It turns out a proper chokehold is an excellent way to get one's political point across.

Alas, Edith Garrud appears to have been as gentile as the Queen's corgis. There's no indication of any Jewish lineage or personal identification, leaving her Jew Score firmly in the "Not a Jew" category. Still, her ability to turn a polite protest into a surprisingly effective scuffle earns her some kvell-worthiness for empowering women to fight for their rights, even if it wasn't for the right tribe.
