Born Theodor Friedrich Emil Janenz, Emil Jannings was a titan of German cinema during the Weimar Republic, known for his imposing screen presence and intense acting style. He found international fame in silent films and was even lured to Hollywood, where he made history as the first-ever winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor for his roles in "The Last Command" and "The Way of All Flesh." America quickly discovered that while his acting was sublime, his English was, shall we say, a work in progress, leading him back to the familiar embrace of German studios.

His career, much like Germany itself, took a rather unfortunate turn. After returning to his homeland, Jannings continued to star in critically acclaimed films, but as the political winds shifted, so did his choices. He became a prominent figure in films made under the Nazi regime, often playing powerful, authoritative figures that aligned with the prevailing ideology. While not a Jew himself, his willingness to lend his considerable talent to such propaganda is certainly a choice.

After the war, Jannings was, perhaps unsurprisingly, blacklisted by the Allied powers, his once-glorious career extinguished by his association with the Third Reich. He retired to Austria, where he spent his final years, a stark reminder that even the most celebrated artists are not immune to the gravitational pull of problematic politics. A testament to talent, tarnished by terrible timing and even worse decisions.
