Joshua Abraham Norton, born in London and later a successful San Francisco businessman, lost his fortune in a disastrous rice speculation. This financial ruin, combined with what some speculate was a mental health crisis, led him to declare himself "Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico" in 1859, a title he held until his death in 1880.

Despite the absurdity of his claims, Emperor Norton was not merely tolerated but embraced by San Francisco. He issued decrees (some remarkably progressive, like advocating for a League of Nations), inspected streets, and even printed his own currency, which local businesses often accepted. His imperial pronouncements were regularly published in city newspapers, highlighting the unique blend of delusion and public affection that defined his reign.

While his ancestry traced back to Jewish parents who immigrated to South Africa, Norton himself showed no public adherence to Jewish identity or practice after his move to the United States. His life was far more about performance art and a peculiar form of urban charm than any religious observance. He was a beloved fixture, a symbol of San Francisco's tolerant and eccentric spirit, mourned by thousands at his funeral. One could argue he achieved a kind of kvell-worthiness not through traditional success, but by becoming an unforgettable, albeit self-appointed, monarch of the American West.
