Empress Theodora

Born into humble circumstances around 500 CE, Theodora's early life was, shall we say, "colorful." A former actress and possibly a courtesan, she captivated the future Emperor Justinian I, who, much to the consternation of the aristocracy, changed laws to marry her. Talk about a glow-up.

Once empress, Theodora wasn't content to just sit pretty. She became Justinian's trusted advisor, wielding immense political power and often influencing imperial policy. Her fierce intelligence and iron will were legendary, helping to quell the Nika Riots with a memorable speech that basically dared everyone to run away if they were cowards.

While her origins were distinctly un-Jewish, her legacy, which includes championing women's rights and religious minorities (specifically Miaphysite Christians, not Jews, though a good thought), certainly brought some nachas to the oppressed, even if not to the Tribe. She was a Christian, devoutly so, but perhaps less enthusiastically so when it came to Jewish interests. Still, a powerful woman with humble beginnings making good? That's kvell-worthy in any language.

So, while Theodora may have had more in common with Hollywood royalty than ancient Israelite queens, her story proves that sometimes, the most unexpected individuals can leave the most indelible mark on history.
