Born in Hamburg, Germany, Eva Hesse’s family, who were Jewish, fled the Nazi regime just before World War II. Her early life was marked by displacement, first to a children's home in Amersfoort, Netherlands, and later to England, before finally settling in New York in 1939. This experience undoubtedly shaped her work, though not always overtly. So, yes, O=5, no question.

After studying at Cooper Union and Yale, Hesse quickly became a prominent figure in the New York art scene of the 1960s. Her groundbreaking sculptures, often made from latex, fiberglass, and plastics, pushed the boundaries of what was considered "art" and challenged the rigid tenets of Minimalism. While her work doesn't scream "Jewish identity" in a traditional sense, her artistic output is deeply personal and reflective of a life lived through tumult.

Her tragically short career produced a body of work that continues to influence contemporary artists. She brought a raw, emotional vulnerability to abstraction, creating pieces that were both formally rigorous and deeply human. Dying at 34 from a brain tumor, her legacy, though brief, is monumental, proving that even a short run can leave an everlasting mark on the art world. For that, she earns a solid K=4, because influencing generations of artists is pretty kvell-worthy, no matter your background.
