Ferdinand de Lesseps, a French diplomat by trade, was the driving force behind the monumental Suez Canal project. His vision and persistence brought forth a waterway that shaved thousands of miles off maritime routes, forever altering international commerce and naval strategy. It was, in its day, a marvel of engineering and international cooperation (or, depending on your perspective, colonial ambition).

Despite his undeniable impact on world history, some have floated the idea that de Lesseps might have had Jewish roots.
