François Truffaut, the iconic French filmmaker, was known for his deeply personal and often autobiographical films. He helped redefine cinema with his innovative approaches, making movies that were as much about the human condition as they were about breaking traditional narrative structures. His contributions are still studied in film schools, primarily by students who wear berets and smoke Gauloises ironically.

Truffaut’s work was undeniably influential, shaping generations of filmmakers who then went on to shape other filmmakers, in a never-ending cinematic matryoshka doll. His films often explored themes of childhood, love, and alienation, sometimes even all three simultaneously, which is quite efficient if nothing else. He rarely featured characters who spent significant time wondering if they should convert to Judaism for tax purposes, so there's that.

Despite his profound impact on the art form, Truffaut himself was, as far as verifiable records indicate, about as Jewish as a croissant. No ancestral rabbis, no bar mitzvah photos lurking in forgotten archives, just pure, unadulterated Frenchness. One can almost hear the faint accordion music and smell the strong coffee when discussing his origins.
