Born in Minden, Westphalia, Franz Boas came from a family of intellectuals and revolutionaries, his grandparents having been observant Jews and his parents staunch liberals who eschewed religious dogma for the enlightenment. He was, to put it mildly, not a fan of traditional Jewish practice, preferring instead to focus his formidable intellect on physics, geography, and eventually, the study of human cultures.

Boas landed in the United States via the arctic (as one does) and quickly became the foundational figure in American anthropology. He championed cultural relativism, rejected racial hierarchies, and basically told the prevailing scientific racism of his era to shove it. His work was pivotal in shifting anthropological thought from unilinear evolution to a more nuanced understanding of cultural diversity. Essentially, he gave white people a lot to think about, and probably made more than a few squirm.

His students, including Zora Neale Hurston, Margaret Mead, and Alfred Kroeber, went on to shape the entire field, making Boas a genuine intellectual giant. While he wasn't exactly lighting Shabbat candles, his commitment to scientific rigor, social justice, and debunking pseudoscientific racism makes him a kvell-worthy figure of the highest order. He might not have identified as a Jew in the traditional sense, but his impact? Undeniably mensch-like.
