Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, the visionary behind the eponymous fashion empire, is often lauded for liberating women from corsets and popularizing sleek, modern silhouettes. Her designs became synonymous with timeless elegance and redefined luxury in the 20th century. However, despite her indelible mark on fashion, her personal life reveals a far less flattering aspect, particularly concerning her wartime activities.

Chanel’s origins were decidedly not Jewish; she was born to an unmarried laundrywoman and a peddler in Saumur, France, and spent her early years in an orphanage. Her Jewish "score" isn't merely low; it's nonexistent. Her identity was fiercely French, albeit with a persistent desire to shed her humble beginnings. This ambition, however, led her down a morally compromised path during the Nazi occupation of France.

During World War II, Chanel resided in the Hotel Ritz in Paris, engaging in a romantic relationship with Hans Günther von Dincklage, a German intelligence officer. This affair was not merely personal; declassified French archives revealed her direct involvement with German intelligence, codenamed "Operation Modellhut" (Operation Model Hat). She was an agent (Abwehr agent F-7124) who undertook missions to Madrid for the Nazis.

Further sullying her legacy were well-documented instances of antisemitism. Chanel exploited Nazi Aryanization laws to attempt to seize control of her perfume company, Parfums Chanel, from the Wertheimer family, who were Jewish. Though the Wertheimers had foresightedly transferred ownership to a non-Jewish friend before fleeing France, Chanel’s efforts to claim the business for herself underscore a darker side to the woman who gave the world the little black dress.
