Gad Elmaleh
Gad Elmaleh, a Moroccan-born comedian (he is huge in France, as can be seen on his Netflix series... "Huge in France"), recently made a movie, "Stay With Us", about a Jewish comedian named Gad who decides to convert to Christianity. Oomph. Starring as the fictional Gad's parents... his real parents. Double oomph.
So it's somewhat understandable that people started to believe that Gad himself converted out. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (is telegraph still a thing?) wrote an article about it, it made its way to Wikipedia, so there we go: Gad, no longer a Jew.
(A brief aside, for we love brief asides: Gad used to shtup Princess Charlotte of Monaco. The two had a son, but before we can get excited about a Jewish prince, the kid is not exactly Jewish (baptized) and not exactly a prince (his parents never married). Oh well.)
Except that he is still a Jew. Gad has corrected the conjecture, even citing the Wikipedia mistake: he didn't convert. Yes, he is somewhat fascinated with Christianity, but he is still a Jew. The movie is fiction! As for casting his parents? Well, who else to have a real reaction to such shocking news...
The lesson, as always: be careful with Wikipedia.
