George Balanchine
Born Georgy Melitonovich Balanchivadze in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Balanchine's family was Georgian Orthodox Christian. His father was a well-known composer, Meliton Balanchivadze. There's no indication of any Jewish lineage or personal identification with Judaism whatsoever. So, that settles that, then.
Balanchine, however, was a prolific and transformative figure in the world of ballet. After studying at the Imperial Ballet School, he left Russia for Europe and eventually the United States, invited by Lincoln Kirstein. Together, they established the School of American Ballet and, subsequently, the New York City Ballet.
His choreographic genius produced over 400 ballets, shaping the neoclassical style and fundamentally altering the landscape of American dance. He turned ballet from a European import into a distinctly American art form, which, let's be honest, is pretty impressive for a guy with no discernible Jewish roots. We'll still claim the achievement, just not the man.
