George C. Marshall
George Catlett Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, to a prominent family with deep roots in American history. While his family tree is undeniably impressive, boasting connections to presidents and Supreme Court justices, it appears to be entirely devoid of any discernible menorah-lighting, gefilte fish-eating branches. His heritage was firmly Protestant, specifically Episcopalian.
Marshall's career was a masterclass in military and diplomatic service. As Chief of Staff of the Army during World War II, he was essentially the architect of victory, overseeing the largest expansion of the U.S. Army in history. He then went on to serve as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, making him a rare breed who could both win a war and then clean up the resulting mess.
His crowning achievement, and the reason many European nations aren't currently speaking German or Russian, was the Marshall Plan. This massive economic aid package rebuilt Western Europe after the war, preventing widespread poverty and political instability. While not a Jewish initiative, per se, the resulting stability certainly allowed for the flourishing of Jewish communities that had survived the Holocaust. We'll count that as indirect kvell.
So, while his strategic genius and dedication to global stability are undeniable, his Jewish bona fides are, shall we say, non-existent. He was a pillar of the WASP establishment, through and through.
