Born in Paris, France, Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès came from a family of shoemakers who had found success in the manufacturing of boots. His family was Catholic, and there is no indication whatsoever of any Jewish heritage or personal identification with Judaism.

Méliès was a true innovator, transitioning from stage magician to filmmaker with an unparalleled vision. He is famous for inadvertently discovering the stop trick, which led to the development of early special effects, and his film "A Trip to the Moon" remains an iconic masterpiece of cinematic history. While his later career saw financial struggles and the tragic loss of many of his films, his impact on the art form is undeniable.

Despite his non-Jewish background, Méliès's ability to conjure worlds out of thin air and delight audiences with pure imagination is certainly kvell-worthy. He laid the groundwork for countless filmmakers who followed, proving that the impossible was merely a matter of clever staging and a well-placed splice.
