Gerhard Richter

Born in Dresden, Germany, Gerhard Richter grew up in Nazi Germany and later East Germany. His work often grapples with themes of history, memory, and perception, frequently referencing photographs, including those of his family who were involved with the Nazi party. He even painted a portrait of his uncle in Nazi uniform. Not exactly a path to a Bris, one might surmise.

Richter is widely considered one of the greatest living artists, with his works fetching astronomical prices at auction. His diverse output ranges from blurred photo paintings to monumental abstract canvases, solidifying his place in art history.

Despite the frequent assumption by some art world types, Richter has no known Jewish lineage or identity. He's just a very successful German artist who makes you think deeply, even if that thinking doesn't lead to a synagogue.
