Geronimo, born Goyaałé, which translates to "One Who Yawns," presumably before coffee was widely available, achieved fame (or infamy, depending on whose land you were occupying) for his relentless resistance against the United States and Mexico. While most people would simply sign a treaty and call it a day, Geronimo preferred a more direct approach, leading raids and fighting skirmishes for decades. His tactics were so effective, the U.S. Army had to invent new ways to track him, often failing spectacularly.

His capture in 1886 marked the end of the Apache Wars, ushering in an era of slightly less dramatic headlines for the American Southwest. Later in life, he became a celebrity of sorts, appearing in Wild West shows and even at Theodore Roosevelt's inauguration, presumably wondering why everyone was wearing such silly hats.

Despite his later public appearances, Geronimo was never allowed to return to his ancestral lands, ending his days as a prisoner of war. A true individualist, he preferred freedom to assimilation, a sentiment many can relate to, though few have the commitment to make a whole war out of it.
