Gershom Scholem

Gershom Scholem, born Gerhard Scholem in Berlin to assimilated Jewish parents, found his passion for Judaism at a young age, rejecting his family's secularism. He became an ardent Zionist, embracing Hebrew and eventually immigrating to Palestine in 1923, leaving behind a family who reportedly weren't thrilled with his intellectual and spiritual detours.

His groundbreaking work at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, particularly his magnum opus "Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism," single-handedly established the academic study of Kabbalah and Sabbateanism. Before Scholem, many scholars considered these topics fringe or irrelevant, but he proved them to be central to Jewish thought, culture, and history, even if his meticulous analysis sometimes stripped away some of the mystic glamour.

Scholem wasn't just a scholar; he was a philosophical heavyweight, engaging in legendary intellectual sparring with figures like Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno. He famously debated Hannah Arendt over the Eichmann trial, demonstrating that even a deep dive into ancient Jewish texts didn't make one immune to contemporary political firestorms.
