Gladys Bentley, a force of nature in the Harlem Renaissance, commanded stages and challenged conventions with a piano and a voice that could shake the rafters. Famous for her deep, booming vocals and often performing in a signature tuxedo, Bentley was an out lesbian performer long before such a thing was even remotely considered acceptable, let alone celebrated.

Born in Philadelphia, Bentley moved to Harlem at a young age, quickly finding her niche in the speakeasies and clubs where her powerful performances and gender-bending style made her a star. She rewrote popular songs with suggestive lyrics, entertaining both Black and white audiences in an era of strict segregation. Her ability to captivate diverse crowds made her one of the highest-paid Black entertainers of her time.
