Gueorgui Pinkhassov, born in Moscow in 1952, developed an early passion for photography, which somehow didn't land him in the gulags despite the oppressive Soviet regime. His unique approach, often described as painterly, transforms everyday scenes into compelling compositions, proving that even a mundane sidewalk can be art if you squint hard enough and have a good lens.

After initially studying applied art and working as a still photographer for Mosfilm, Pinkhassov's career truly took off when he joined the prestigious Magnum Photos agency in 1988. This move cemented his reputation on the international stage, allowing him to travel the globe and capture moments with his signature style, usually involving reflections, saturated colors, and a healthy dose of visual ambiguity.

His work has graced countless publications and galleries, earning him a place among photography's elite. Whether he's shooting street scenes in Tokyo or capturing the nuances of light in a desolate landscape, Pinkhassov consistently demonstrates an eye for the extraordinary in the ordinary, which, for a Russian, is quite an achievement.
