Haile Selassie I

Born Tafari Makonnen Woldemikael, Haile Selassie I was a fascinating historical figure, reigning as Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. He's often remembered for his resistance against Italian occupation and his role in the Organization of African Unity, solidifying his place as a significant leader on the world stage. Clearly, a man who knew how to make an impression.

While Selassie himself was a devout member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, a Christian denomination, his purported ancestry is where things get a bit... Biblical. The Solomonic dynasty, to which he belonged, claims descent from the legendary union of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. So, while his personal Jewish identity was precisely nil, his origin story is steeped in ancient Israelite lore – a story he never discouraged, naturally.

His lasting legacy, however, might just be his unintentional posthumous divinity. Though he never embraced the title himself, Haile Selassie became the central figure of the Rastafari movement, worshipped as God incarnate. It's not every day a Christian emperor becomes the messiah for a movement based on Black liberation and a return to Africa. Talk about kvell-worthiness, even if it was completely accidental and, frankly, a bit awkward for him in life.
